SUMMARY:National Trails Day Social Hike LI
DESCRIPTION:Join us on National Trails Day for a fun hike I am leading for the Adirondack Mountain Club in Sunken Meadow State Park on the north shore of Long Island. \n\n\n\nThis hike will include the famous bluffs as well as trails in parts of the park that most people never visit. It will be a moderately strenuous hike as we will cover 6.5 miles and 1100 feet of elevation gain while aiming for a pace of around 2 mph. The hills and remote feel of the trails (despite being close to roads and homes) provide an experience reminiscent of Harriman State Park. Some of the hills are steep and there are a couple of spots that feature tricky footing. Dress for the weather\, wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots and bring at least a liter of water. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor registration details\, see the ADK Long Island Website \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore questions? SUMMARY:Friday and Balsam Cap - Social Series
DESCRIPTION:Our May 2023 social series hike will be a challenging bushwhack of Friday and Balsam Cap Mountains in the Catskill Mountains.  The climb to Friday Mountain is quite steep and gains a lot of elevation.  With a total elevation gain of  3000 feet over 6 miles\, this hike will take most of the day.  Along the way we’ll enjoy some classic Catskill views.  These two trail-less peaks are required summits for membership in the Catskill 3500 club. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis hike is being presented in conjunction with the Catskill 3500 Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club. DESCRIPTION:The March 2023 Catskill Social Series hike will once again visit one of our favorite hikes: the Blackhead Range. This includes 3 of the highest of the Catskill 3500 peaks: Blackhead\, Back Dome and Thomas Cole. At just shy of 4000 feet\, expect full winter conditions on these summits. Blackhead Mountain is one of the winter required peaks for membership in the Catskill 3500 club and this hike will count towards the winter requirement. \n\n\n\nThis strenuous winter hike will cover 8 miles and nearly 3000 feet of elevation gain. SUMMARY:Halcott Mountain - Social Series
DESCRIPTION:Start the New Year with a guided bushwhack to the 3509 foot summit of Halcott Mountain in the Catskills.  Distance-wise this is one of the shortest Catskill High Peak hikes\, but not the easiest. SUMMARY:Rusk and Hunter Mt - Social Series
DESCRIPTION:Our December social series event in the Catskills is a combined bushwhack and trailed hike to Rusk and Hunter Mountains.  The first part of the day is a guided bushwhack of Rusk Mountain. Rusk isn’t far\, but very steep as the route climbs 1400 feet in just over a mile to the 3700 foot summit.  From there we’ll descend to the relatively easier Spruceton trail and ascend another 1800 feet to the Hunter Mountain summit fire tower.  At 4030 feet\, Hunter is the second highest peak in the Catskills. \n\n\n\nThe hike is strenuous and will total 10 miles with 3400 feet of elevation gain and will require full winter gear (including spikes and snowshoes). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis hike is being presented in conjunction with the Catskill 3500 Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club. SUMMARY:Balsam Lake Mountain – Social Series
DESCRIPTION:Our November social series hike returns to Balsam Lake Mountain and it’s iconic fire tower. At 3729 feet elevation\, Balsam lake Mountain is the 14th highest on the Catskill 3500 list. The fire tower is also part of both the Catskills Fire Tower Challenge and the ADK Fire Tower Challenge. This hike of 6 miles with 1250 feet of elevation gain will follow one of the least strenuous routes to a Catskill high peak and may be suitable for fit beginners. Much of the hike is on an old woods road with a gradual\, but steady ascent.  Will we have early season snow and ice or a beautiful fall day?  Too soon to tell but be ready with appropriate gear. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis hike is being presented in conjunction with the Catskill 3500 Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club. DESCRIPTION:October’s featured Catskill Social Series hike is West Kill Mountain.  Please note that this has been rescheduled from a previously announced date of October 6.  The hike will be on October 13. \n\n\n\nWestkill Mountain is the 6th highest peak in the Catskills and the highest point on the Devil’s Path trail (nearby Hunter Mountain is taller but the trail doesn’t pass over it’s summit). This trek is a great introduction to the Devil’s path on one of the gentler sections of the famous trail. \n\n\n\nJoin us on October 13 as we hike past waterfalls and great views to the evergreen clad summit. \n\n\n\nThis is a mostly moderate hike despite the lofty summit at less than an arms length shy of 3900 feet. There are one or two ledges that require minimal scrambling. \n\n\n\nThis hike is being presented in conjunction with the Catskill 3500 Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club.
