After an easy hike to the Balsam Lake Mountain summit (and fire tower) we’ll hike the Finger Lakes Trail both ways to the 3465 foot summit of Millbrook Ridge and back. The fall color change should be underway and the views from the fire tower should be spectacular as usual. This is a 12.8 mile hike with nearly 2700 feet of elevation gain and we will hike at a moderate to quick pace. Balsam Lake Mountain at 3729 feet of elevation is on both the Catskill 3500 and fire tower lists. Millbrook Ridge is on another list that we shall not mention in this post\, but it makes for a great extended hike. \n\n\n\nThis hike is being presented in conjunction with the Adirondack Mountain Club and the Catskill 3500 Club. Both summits have canisters containing a sign-in log book. This all-day hike will cover 11 miles with 2600 feet of elevation gain and includes water crossings (which are usually low in August). We’ll have fun navigating several miles of off-trail wilderness\, but the final miles downhill on the trail usually seem longer for some reason. We’ll need to keep a steady pace to complete this hike in the allotted time. This is a challenging hike. \n\n\n\nThis hike is being presented in conjunction with the Adirondack Mountain Club. The trail may have a threatening name\, but the views on this hike are sublime. This hike of Indian Head and Twin includes some rough sections of trail with difficult scrambles and may not be suitable for novices unless in good shape with recent mountain-hiking experience. Considered trail-less summits\, these will feel very much like trailed hikes. After an interesting hike to the summit canister on Vly Mountain\, we’ll proceed to Bearpen Mountain where we’ll enjoy some unique views of the Schoharie Valley\, as well as remains from an abandoned ski area near the summit. The hike is a workout at 6.5 miles and nearly 2100 feet of elevation gain\, but much of the climbing is relatively gentle compared to most Catskill high peaks. \n\n\n\nThis hike is being presented in conjunction with the Catskill 3500 Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club. It will be a moderately strenuous hike as we will cover 6.5 miles and 1100 feet of elevation gain while aiming for a pace of around 2 mph. The hills and remote feel of the trails (despite being close to roads and homes) provide an experience reminiscent of Harriman State Park. Some of the hills are steep and there are a couple of spots that feature tricky footing.
