Windham High Peak – January 31, 2015

Posted on January 31, 2015 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20150131WHP-WinterFinish-021s400We hiked Windham High Peak on a sub-zero day. Fortunately it was very sunny with a nice snowshoe track and beautiful views. For D, it was his first winter high peak. Continue reading→

Hunter Mountain – Leavitt – January 25, 2015

Posted on January 25, 2015 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20150125_163044s400A day after leading a hike for the Catskill 3500 club, we relaxed by hiking Leavitt (aka Southwest Hunter) and Hunter Mountain. Finding the can on Leavitt was a piece of cake with a nice track already worn along the main herd path on an old rail bed. It wasn’t really fair to call it a bush whack on this day.

Fir and Big Indian – January 24, 2015

Posted on January 24, 2015 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20150124_113735s400Connie and Ed co-led a bushwhack of Fir and Big Indian mountains for the Catskill 3500 Club as part of their annual winter weekend. We had a large group of 12. A few inches of snow the day before made for great snowshoeing and picture postcard scenes despite the cloudy skies.

Friday and Balsam Cap – January 3, 2015

Posted on January 3, 2015 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20150103_124638-Friday-BCs400Three of us hiked Friday and Balsam Cap on a snowy winter day. Not every day can be a bluebird day, but there is something special about a bushwhack in softly falling snow.

Bushwhack Range Plus Two – October 5, 2014

Posted on October 5, 2014 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20141005_125706s400This hike was a great workout and a nice dry run for hiking “the nine” one day, not to mention bagging 6 separate peaks for those who were working a list. The route was a through hike and we spotted cars at Moon Haw and Peekamoose Roads. The weather for this hike was beautiful, especially compared to the prior day when I had hiked Rusk in the rain with a friend. Continue reading→

Friday Mountain – July 13, 2014

Posted on July 13, 2014 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports Leave a comment

20140713FridayMtn-009s400

Our group of 4 planned to bushwhack Friday and Balsam Cap on a very warm humid day. There was a threat of thunderstorms during the afternoon and rather than push our luck, we settled for just Friday and a shorter day. At times the clouds obscured the summits and the haze dulled the views into the valleys, but it didn’t rain while we were on the mountain. Continue reading→

Plateau and Sugarloaf – June 22, 2014

Posted on June 22, 2014 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports Leave a comment

20140622PlateauSugarloaf-001s400We had a group of 6 for this hike of Plateau and Sugarloaf mountains in the Catskills. We hiked the Devil’s Path over both summits. The ascents and descents on both sides of both mountains are very steep, but the weather was perfect for great views from the viewpoints. Towards the end of the hike we introduced the stone chair temple construction at Dibbles Quarry to some of the group who had not seen it before.

Halcott Mountain – March 16, 2014

Posted on March 16, 2014 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports Leave a comment

IMG_5751s400 Halcott is one of the trailess peaks required for membership in the Catskill 3500 club. We’ve led a number of groups to the canister over the years. Halcott is a relatively short but steep bush whack.

Table, Peekamoose, Lone and Rocky – March 9, 2014

Posted on March 9, 2014 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports Leave a comment

20140309_130446s400It was a small group and we hiked four Catskill peaks, or was it six? Starting from the trail at Denning, we hiked to Table and Peekamoose, then left the trail and headed over to Lone and Rocky, then backtracked the way we had come, passing over Lone and Table again. We wore snowshoes the entire way and the going was pretty easy because someone else had set a very good track on a good bearing and we merely needed to follow it, although we did Continue reading→

A different sort of day on Leavitt – December 22, 2013

Posted on December 22, 2013 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports Leave a comment

This was a successful bushwhack of Leavitt Peak (Southwest Hunter), although not exactly in the manner planned. The mountain and the December weather were very much out of character and provided a good, if unexpected experience. No photos were taken (also out of character and unexpected), but our snarky musings on the days events hopefully provide a few good nuggets on expecting the unexpected in the mountains.
