Hunter Mountain Firetower – March 21, 2015

Posted on March 21, 2015 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20150321Hunter-036s400
We led a small group to the Hunter Mountain fire tower on the last day of calendar winter. For M, this counted towards his winter 3500 list. It was a beautiful day for a hike, sunny at times, cloudy at others, but always clear enough for great views from the rime encrusted tower.

Balsam Cap and a Winter 3500 Finish on Rocky – March 15, 2015

Posted on March 15, 2015 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20150315BalsamCapRocky-006s400We hiked Rocky via the slightly less traditional route of an out and back from Moon Haw Road. Passing over Balsam Cap in both directions was a nice addition, but Rocky was the prime objective for this hike because it was G’s 35th for her winter round. Continue reading→

North Dome and Sherrill

Posted on March 7, 2015 by EdMoran Posted in Bushwhacking, Catskills, Trip Reports, Winter

20150307NoDoS-03c1s400Our group of 6 bushwhacked North Dome and Sherrill mountains on a late winter day that featured a mix of sunshine and occasional flurries. The deep snow allowed for plenty of horseplay glissading down the snowshoe track that we repacked.

Windham High Peak – January 31, 2015

Posted on January 31, 2015 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20150131WHP-WinterFinish-021s400We hiked Windham High Peak on a sub-zero day. Fortunately it was very sunny with a nice snowshoe track and beautiful views. For D, it was his first winter high peak. Continue reading→

Hunter Mountain – Leavitt – January 25, 2015

Posted on January 25, 2015 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20150125_163044s400A day after leading a hike for the Catskill 3500 club, we relaxed by hiking Leavitt (aka Southwest Hunter) and Hunter Mountain. Finding the can on Leavitt was a piece of cake with a nice track already worn along the main herd path on an old rail bed. It wasn’t really fair to call it a bush whack on this day.

Fir and Big Indian – January 24, 2015

Posted on January 24, 2015 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20150124_113735s400Connie and Ed co-led a bushwhack of Fir and Big Indian mountains for the Catskill 3500 Club as part of their annual winter weekend. We had a large group of 12. A few inches of snow the day before made for great snowshoeing and picture postcard scenes despite the cloudy skies.

Friday and Balsam Cap – January 3, 2015

Posted on January 3, 2015 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20150103_124638-Friday-BCs400Three of us hiked Friday and Balsam Cap on a snowy winter day. Not every day can be a bluebird day, but there is something special about a bushwhack in softly falling snow.

Halcott Mountain – March 16, 2014

Posted on March 16, 2014 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

IMG_5751s400 Halcott is one of the trailess peaks required for membership in the Catskill 3500 club. We’ve led a number of groups to the canister over the years. Halcott is a relatively short but steep bush whack.

Table, Peekamoose, Lone and Rocky – March 9, 2014

Posted on March 9, 2014 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20140309_130446s400It was a small group and we hiked four Catskill peaks, or was it six? Starting from the trail at Denning, we hiked to Table and Peekamoose, then left the trail and headed over to Lone and Rocky, then backtracked the way we had come, passing over Lone and Table again. We wore snowshoes the entire way and the going was pretty easy because someone else had set a very good track on a good bearing and we merely needed to follow it, although we did Continue reading→

Mount Waumbek – February 21, 2014

Posted on February 21, 2014 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20140221_123652s400 Hiked Starr King and Waumbek with David. It was one of the best rainy day hikes ever…partly because it didn’t rain. The snowshoe track was obvious, but it had a few inches of new snow and sleet covering it that had only just finished falling. It was a fairly warm day (but without rain) and snow balling on the snowshoes was an issue, but manageable. Thought there would be no views, but visibility was excellent under the clouds.
