Mt Moosilauke – August 30, 2014

Posted on August 30, 2014 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20140830MoosilaukeNH4K-finish-035s400

This was a great day for a hike to an open summit. Two of our group passed on the hike after one of them developed a bad blister the day before, but they thoughtfully met us at the trailhead at the end of the hike with some refreshments from a local brewery that they had just toured.

The rest of us (8) started from the Beaver Brook trailhead on Rte. 112 hoping for a scenic and less traveled route on the busy Labor Day weekend. Beaver Brook was a success on both counts. Continue reading→

Presidential Range Traverse – August 27 – 29, 2014

Posted on August 29, 2014 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

This was a three day traverse of the Presidential Range that included all of the peaks in the range.  After hiking Mount Madison on day 1, we spent the night in the newly renovated Madison Springs hut.  On day two we hiked the northern Presidential range including Mt Adams, Mt Jefferson, Mount Clay (a 5000 footer but not officially Continue reading→

Owls Head – July 20, 2014

Posted on July 20, 2014 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20140720OwlsHead-037s400A smaller group of 6 hiked Owl’s Head from Lincoln Woods on day three of our White Mountains trip while the others opted for a relaxing day down in the valley.  Owl’s Head is the longest standard route to one of the New Hampshire 4000 footers, although we did cut a couple of miles off and avoid a tricky water crossing by bushwhacking both ways near Black Pond.

The Hancocks – July 19, 2014

Posted on July 19, 2014 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20140719Hancocks-054s400Day 2 of our Whites trip featured a circuit of the Hancocks (Mount Hancock and South Hancock). The weather was a little more humid and not as clear as the previous day in the Tripyramids, but remained dry and was still a nice day to hike.

Tripyramids – July 18, 2014

Posted on July 18, 2014 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20140718Tripyramids-002s400

This was the first day of our July group trip to the White Mountains in New Hampshire. After a comfortable night at the AMC Highland Center, our group of 9 hikers started bright and early at the Pine Bend Trailhead on the Kancamagus Highway. The weather was perfect with great visibility from the many view points on our loop hike of North Tripyramid and Middle Tripyramid Mountains. Continue reading→

Mount Waumbek – February 21, 2014

Posted on February 21, 2014 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20140221_123652s400 Hiked Starr King and Waumbek with David. It was one of the best rainy day hikes ever…partly because it didn’t rain. The snowshoe track was obvious, but it had a few inches of new snow and sleet covering it that had only just finished falling. It was a fairly warm day (but without rain) and snow balling on the snowshoes was an issue, but manageable. Thought there would be no views, but visibility was excellent under the clouds. Liberty and Flume – August 31, 2013

Posted on August 31, 2013 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20130831Liberty-Flume-008es400
Part of our pre-labor day White Mountains trip, this was an 11 mile thru-hike from the Flume Visitor Center to Lincoln Woods. It was a very warm, humid and mostly cloudy day, but very little rain fell. Beginning on the Whitehouse Trail we quickly reached the Liberty Springs Trail which becomes increasingly steep until it reaches the junction with the Franconia Ridge Trail. We stopped at the junction for a snack and to cool off and spoke briefly with a ranger who was making the rounds.

Mt Carrigain – August 30, 2013

Posted on August 30, 2013 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20130830Carrigain-063es400As part of an extended pre-Labor Day hiking trip in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, I took the group up Mt. Carrigain via the Signal Ridge trail. From the trailhead on Sawyer River Road this hike is about 10.6 miles and 3300 feet of elevation gain. In the winter, the road is closed and you should plan on this hike being several miles longer. Mt Willey – August 16, 2013

Posted on August 16, 2013 by EdMoran Posted in Trip Reports

20130816MtWilley-043s400

This was a day hike starting on the Ethan Pond trail at the Willey House station. It is a short hike at just about 5.5 miles, but includes about 2800 feet of elevation gain, almost half of which occurs during the last 3/4 mile before the summit. This steep section also includes an extensive set of ladders.
