Three of us hiked Friday and Balsam Cap on a snowy winter day. Not every day can be a bluebird day, but there is something special about a bushwhack in softly falling snow.

Gray, Skylight and Marcy – October 12, 2014
I led our small group on a hike of Gray, Skylight and Marcy starting and ending at the Adirondack Loj. We did a loop of sorts via Lake Arnold / Feldspar up to Four Corners over Marcy and back to the Loj via Van Hoevenberg.
The weather was fantastic, although the trails were icy in spots above about 4000 feet. Continue reading
Bushwhack Range Plus Two – October 5, 2014
This hike was a great workout and a nice dry run for hiking “the nine” one day, not to mention bagging 6 separate peaks for those who were working a list. The route was a through hike and we spotted cars at Moon Haw and Peekamoose Roads. The weather for this hike was beautiful, especially compared to the prior day when I had hiked Rusk in the rain with a friend. Continue reading
Owls Head – July 20, 2014
A smaller group of 6 hiked Owl’s Head from Lincoln Woods on day three of our White Mountains trip while the others opted for a relaxing day down in the valley. Owl’s Head is the longest standard route to one of the New Hampshire 4000 footers, although we did cut a couple of miles off and avoid a tricky water crossing by bushwhacking both ways near Black Pond.

Friday Mountain – July 13, 2014
Our group of 4 planned to bushwhack Friday and Balsam Cap on a very warm humid day. There was a threat of thunderstorms during the afternoon and rather than push our luck, we settled for just Friday and a shorter day. At times the clouds obscured the summits and the haze dulled the views into the valleys, but it didn’t rain while we were on the mountain. Continue reading
Halcott Mountain – March 16, 2014
Halcott is one of the trailess peaks required for membership in the Catskill 3500 club. We’ve led a number of groups to the canister over the years. Halcott is a relatively short but steep bush whack.

Table, Peekamoose, Lone and Rocky – March 9, 2014
It was a small group and we hiked four Catskill peaks, or was it six? Starting from the trail at Denning, we hiked to Table and Peekamoose, then left the trail and headed over to Lone and Rocky, then backtracked the way we had come, passing over Lone and Table again. We wore snowshoes the entire way and the going was pretty easy because someone else had set a very good track on a good bearing and we merely needed to follow it, although we did Continue reading
A different sort of day on Leavitt – December 22, 2013
This was a successful bushwhack of Leavitt Peak (Southwest Hunter), although not exactly in the manner planned. The mountain and the December weather were very much out of character and provided a good, if unexpected experience. No photos were taken (also out of character and unexpected), but our snarky musings on the days events hopefully provide a few good nuggets on expecting the unexpected in the mountains.

Halcott Mountain – October 19, 2013
We hiked Halcott Mountain a beautiful fall day. For MK, this was #38; the next to last peak on his quest to earn his 3500 patch.
From the parking area we crossed the creek above the waterfall on the north branch of the Bushnellsville Creek. We continued through the cairn fields and then stayed on the north side of the next creek, paralleling it while climbing mainly towards the west-northwest.

Street and Nye – October 12, 2013
Alternate title: There are no views on Street and Nye
Overheard at the Loj: “We are saving Street and Nye for a rainy day because there are no views”.
Today’s lesson: There usually are views if you take the time to look (and don’t be an eavesdropper at the Loj). Please enjoy the rest of this somewhat tongue-in-cheek post: Continue reading
